UK Rhodes Scholarship

Introduction:
The Rhodes Scholarship is a postgraduate reward for study at the University of Oxford. Rhodes Scholars may study any full-time postgraduate course offered by the University, whether a taught Master’s programme or a research degree; or a second undergraduate degree (senior status), over 2 years. Please note that Scholars may only study for the Masters in Financial Economics or the MBA in the 2nd year of their Scholarship.

The Rhodes Scholarship is for 2 years in the first instance, though may be held for one year only; applications for a third year of Scholarship for those pursuing the DPhil are considered during the course of the 2nd year.
University and College fees are paid by the Rhodes Trust. Also, Scholars receive a monthly maintenance payment to cover accommodation and living expenses. Currently, the maintenance stipend is set at £958 per month.

Who can apply
Rhodes Scholars are selected from the following countries:

  1. Australia
  2. Bermuda
  3. Canada
  4. Commonwealth Caribbean
  5. Germany
  6. Hong Kong
  7. India
  8. Jamaica
  9. Kenya
  10. New Zealand
  11. Pakistan
  12. South Africa and neighbors (Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland), USA, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Cecil Rhodes directed that the selection of scholars should be based on academic ability; sporting activity; qualities of personal morality, strength, and sympathy; and a sense of the public good. The Trust continues to respect the spirit of these definitions, as identified within our contemporary context. Thus, while the Trustees believe that high academic achievement is a must, they also believe in the necessity of attainment in the area broadly defined by the terms of the Will. The Rhodes Trust and Oxford University require that selection for a Scholarship and for admission to the University will be ‘without regard to marital status, race, ethnic origin, color, religion, sexual orientation, social background, or disability’.
The Rhodes Scholarship is a postgraduate award. Therefore candidates must have completed their first degree to a very high standard by the time of arrival in Oxford. The exact terms of eligibility (age limit, residency, etc.) vary according to country.

How to apply
The selection of Rhodes Scholars is supervised by a National Secretary of the Rhodes Trust in each selected country.
